Why???

Proposition H8TE
So let's explore this a bit.
What is Proposition 8?
Proposition 8 is an initiative state constitutional amendment on the 2008 California General Election ballot, titled Eliminates Right of Same-Sex Couples to Marry. If passed, the proposition would "change the California Constitution to eliminate the right of same-sex couples to marry in California."A new section would be added stating "only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California."
The measure was originally submitted for the ballot by petitioners with the title "California Marriage Protection Act."The title and summary were revised by
Attorney General Jerry Brown to more "accurately reflect the measure."The Superior Court of California ruled in favor of these changes, stating, "The title and summary is not false or misleading because it states that Proposition 8 would 'eliminate the right of same-sex couples to marry' in California. The California Supreme Court unequivocally held that same-sex couples have a constitutional right to marry under the California Constitution."
So I became a little heated this morning talking about it to the mother in law. Let's call her the MIL. She said that it was passed b/c the majority of this country believes that marriage is for man and woman only and is fundamentally christian. I said that was bullshit! If that was the case then why is abortion legal? the MIL said, well your talking about life...
I said then Proposition 8 should not have passed, because we are talking about life.
Who the fuck cares if Adam loves Adam? or Eve loves Eve? MIL replied that they can still live as a couple if they want. 'YES MIL...BUT... they are not granted the same rights as a married couple, they don't have rights of survivor ship, they don't get to share medical insurance, adopt, medical decisions for a dying spouse, ...can you not see the difference?"
She shrugs...
My reply... You are just too damn Catholic for me I suppose... "Oh Elnora your just passionate about it b/c your brother is gay!"
No, that is where you are wrong.. And America.. not everyone that feels the same way as me, has a family member or a friend that is Gay. You are talking about basic human rights, equality.
Barack Obama, please live up to your promise!

Most political promises are a lot like long underwear. Once the season is over, they are placed in the dresser drawer and forgotten about until they are needed again.

I've heard some people believe that Obama opposes gay marriage just because it's the politically smart thing to do. Provided that's true, now that he's in he doesn't have to worry about public opinion so much. Let's just say that if the Democratic Congress and White House shoved a gay marriage bill down the Mormon church's throat I just might have to bear Barry's third child. We shall call him Lance.

Woozie and Ecraig... I really hope that is not true.

I need for gay rights to be given more consideration... not just for my brother. I have two cousins that live in California that are gay and need this to be considered as an important issue.

My heart is very sad.

Not only that... I watched so many specials from Ellen's gay marriage...

all that money for nothing is a waste:)

I'm of and always been about the opion that "To each his/her own"

I have no problem with gays receiving the same rights as myself...

So many people just still live in the backwoods era...

I too am very saddened that this bill got passed. I say equality for all. Love knows no boundaries and gay couples deserve all the same rights and recognitions as straight couples.

SSM should be recognized and celebrated just like all marriages.

To be, SSm shouldn't be an "important" issue..it should be a non-issue. It should be allowed, celebrated, considered the norm, for cripe sake. It is 2008.

I suppose that the big picture is, a giant step was taken with this election, and along with that giant step came a few steps backwards...but I know that eventually, the US will catch up to speed.

Unfortunately, Barack is with MIL. He stated pretty clearly that marriage is between a man and a woman. I think he will promote civil unions, which to me is sorta like making blacks sit on the back of the bus or use different water fountains.

I guess progress is one step at a time.

Yeah, this sickened me to watch. I felt like my own marriage was invalidated, if people can suddenly create an ammendment, defining marriage AFTER some marriages had occurred.

What if my hubby hadn't gotten to me first? I could just as easily have fallen for a woman, and then I'd be a non-citizen, denied basic human rights because a bunch of people want to enthusiastically misread the Bible. UGH! At one point, the Bible was used to discount interracial marriages, and marriages between slaves, too.

The Bible needs to thump back sometimes, I think. Maybe say "Stop using me to support hatred and false condemnation when I was written to teach love and true forgiveness!"
